Following the Red Line deal of 1928, which reorganised CFP’s stake in TPC (later renamed the Iraq Petroleum Company in 1929) to 23.75%, the French government’s investment in TPC was handed to CFP. Since its 1929 listing on the Paris Stock Exchange, the corporation has been considered a private sector enterprise.
A lot of the company’s work in the 1930s was exploration and production, mostly in the Middle East. In 1933, its initial refinery commenced operations in Normandy. Following WWII, CFP pursued energy supplies in France while also exploring for oil in Africa, Canada, and Venezuela. In 1946, exploration started in what was then a French territory of Algeria. By the 1950s, Algeria had become one of the world’s leading oil producers.
Fuel under the Total brand, CFP’s downstream product, was first sold in Europe and Africa in 1954.
Leonard Petroleum of Alma, Michigan, and a number of Metro Detroit stations owned by Standard Oil of Indiana were Total’s 1971 entry points into the American market.
As part of its energy holdings sell-off, Esmark sold Vickers Petroleum’s American refining and marketing assets to Total Petroleum (North America) Ltd. in 1980. CFP owned 50% of the firm at the time.
